Anna

“I can’t believe you’re still going out with the guy after he almost drowned you,” Carmen said. “I think it’s sweet,” Sarah added. “Like a memorable first date.”

“He didn’t mean to almost drown me. He was trying to be sweet. Besides, I’ve told you a hundred times; it was my idea.” Standing in front of the full-length mirror in only a red, silk, lacy pair of bra and undies that Sarah had insisted on buying for me earlier, I pulled on a black, flowing skirt and a tank-top before slipping on a pair of jewel-studded sandals. “He’s a good guy. I really like him.”

“Yeah, we could tell,” Carmen groaned. “On the beach, remember?”

“Jealous much?” Sarah shot at Carmen, who rolled her eyes so far into the back of her head I swore they’d never come down. I dabbed on some shimmery lip-gloss and ran my fingers through my wavy hair. I didn’t look half bad, I thought.

And yet, I could still never look as good as my two best friends.

“You really like this guy, don’t you?” Carmen asked. The question caught me off guard. Of course, I liked Nick. I liked him a lot.

Maybe even too much.

“Sure,” I said. “I like him. Why do you sound so concerned?”

“Anna,” Sarah breathed. “We’re going home tomorrow, remember?”

“Of course, I remember,” I snapped. Honestly, I’d been so caught up in thinking about Nick that I’d barely remembered we had a home. A life to return to. Jobs to work and classes to attend. “This is just a fling,”

I said, forcing a shrug that felt like heavy iron on my limbs. “Girls can have flings, right? Nothing has to come of it but a good time.”

“If you say so,” Carmen murmured, but she didn’t look convinced. I looked over at Sarah, who couldn’t even meet my gaze.

“Are you guys seriously jealous that I finally have someone interested in me before you?”

“We didn’t say that, Anna,” Sarah said, meeting my eyes. “But we can tell you really like this guy.”

“We don’t want to get hurt,” Carmen added, getting to her feet. “We still have to go home.”

Glaring at them, I gathered my purse and phone and headed for the door.

“Don’t wait up.” The little bar Nick told me about was right off the beach, and I could smell the hot Mexican food before I was even there. Fajitas, fried tacos, fresh fish. It was overwhelmingly delicious, and the beachside joint was a fun and hip little place, the front totally open so you could enjoy your drinks and food while admiring the starry sky over the ocean. Nick was already there waiting for me. He was dressed in tan shorts and sandals, wearing a button-up shirt. His hair, just as mussy as it had been since the day I’d met him, was so sexy that I wanted to run my fingers through it the moment I saw him.

“You look beautiful,” he said, pulling out my chair. As I sat down, a tingle appeared between my legs with an erotic desire so overwhelming I wasn’t sure if I would make it through dinner.
